HST pt 3 > details begin to emerge

According to local NBC affiliate, we already have Hunter's crazy ass plans and requests for his funeral. His longtime lawyer said today that there was NO suicide note, and that no one knew this was planned. However, he noted this was planned by Hunter "This was definately not spur of the moment". Some specific details can be found straight from Aspen’s daily paper, here

It was also clarified that Hunter did not do this for political of financial reasons. Even though the good doctor once wisely referred to the President at a 'Butt boy for the super rich', the election had nothing to do with this. It is assumed by all close to him that he was in too much physical pain for too long from recent operations that left him basically immobile. What is quite strange is that he was not alone during all of this. His family (son and grandson) were home at the time. Though they did not witness it (thank god), his son Juan was the one to find his dad. Man, that will give you some fucked up dreams for a bit.

The funeral, as you might imagine, is set to involve explosives. Here, I'll let his lawyer (George Tobia jr) explain it: The late Hunter S. Thompson apparently wanted to have his ashes blasted from a cannon across his ranch in Woody Creek. It should also be noted there will not be a tox screen run on the doctor. I know we are all imagining a barrage of most excellent drugs assisting the Doctor at this time... the coroner wisely ruled that whatever the doctor had in him at the time is moot.

Well, what a drag this all is. HST is/was a great writer and someone I would have truely enjoyed getting to know, I think. Oh well. I too would have expected a "cooler" end to his long, Hmm?, not so long, strange life. We all have the right to check-out (again, just my opinion) but I think it's a lousy way to go, especially since the Doctor had such a great familiarity with chemical relief. RIP

I am a long time friend of Juan we went to the Aspen Community School together I have been using the blogs to try to send a message of love to him and the family but I know he is totally swamped because of the media attention at Owl farm and I need to let him know that we care for Him, Anita and the whole family in this time of tragedy while respecting his privacy

Let's see if we can get the word out ...
He was first THE MAN….
He became the myth and legend
To me he was several people.
He was my best friend’s dad although he always called his dad Hunter
(At Juan’s wedding he said to a friend about me “Look there’s another little bastard I raised that turned out OK”)
He was Hunter S. Thompson retiring shy southerner who loved guns and his freedom
He was the Dr. Gonzo who we all know who would be in your face and try to kill you if you attempted to try to take away his guns, drugs, freedom, privacy and the god given right to go into an explosive tirade about it.

To be such a person required him to have a unique emotional support structure. These people now need our support, love and understanding in this time of grief.

Finally Dr. Thompson escaped his own legend. My only question besides how hard he is beating up Nixon in Hell is did Tom Wofe(Right Stuff, Kool Aid Acid Test Tom Wolfe) put out something about Thompson's suicide? And if so, could someone link it here? I'd be much obliged.

Yes Wolfe did. I don't know how to "post it", but I found it online in the Feb 23 Opinion Journal from the Wall Street Journal Editorial Page
